Episode 88 – ANACHRONAEON interview

Hollywood Metal Episode 88 (audio)

Today on the show I interviewed a good friend of mine, Patrik Carlsson, from Västerås, Sweden.  Patrik is the guitarist for two excellent bands, ANACHRONAEON (melodic dark metal) and EYECULT (melodic black metal) while Andreas Åkerlind is the great drummer for both. Our history goes back about 3 years now as listeners know that I am a big fan of Patrik’s work, particularly the song “The English Wizard” off ANACHRONAEON’s 2007 album As The Last Human Spot In Me Dies. Over the course of the interview we talked about the motivations behind the two bands as well as the thematic content and song construction. He detailed the history the two projects and explained what is in the immediate future for both. If you’re into melodic death and black metal, I think you will agree that both of these bands deserve to be counted amongst the upper-crust of the dark metal world. Four ANACHRONAEON songs from the new album 2010 The Futile Quest for Immortality were featured on today’s episode. They include: “Ages Ago”, “The Darkness In The Corner Of My Eye”, “The Message” and “The Beast Called Man.” Two EYECULT songs were also featured. These songs are from a December 2009 release called Morituri Te Salutamus, they are “Aeternum” and “Oblivaeon.”

As I alluded to on the show, back in the summer of 2008 the company I work for, SaysMe.tv, was shooting a series of television commercials to promote the company services which is mainly to make it easy for anyone to run their own commercials on TV. The idea was to put someone one TV who clearly looked like they hijacked a commercial spot. I was selected to be that guy so we shot the commercials one night with some camera equipment and copious amounts of Jack Daniels. During the weeks leading up to the shoot I was rocking out hard to ANACHRONAEON’s “The English Wizard” and the director thought it would be great to use that as the soundtrack for the spots. The result was these nine gems:

Hollywood Metal Episode 78 (Sep-20-2009)

Hollywood Metal Episode 78 (audio)

Sunday Sept 20th 2009: Today was the last time Lane Storli and Tyler Sturgill of the epic black metal band PHLEGETHON would be on the show before they move to Seattle to pursue a full time career in the black metal craft. They are playing a final show on Friday the 25th at the Black Castle in Los Angeles. I will post video after the show. We each picked a few of the songs for today’s episode. Lane picked a couple LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH songs, a TANKARD song and one from a band called TYRAN PACE. Of those, the only we haven’t covered was TYRAN PACE which is a traditional style 80’s power metal band from Germany. Tyler picked one from BAL-SAGOTH and “The Last Ride on the Winds of Eternity” from HIRILORN which is an excellent black metal band from France. Unfortunately they have since split up but their legacy lives on through the music. My Picks for the show were DOOMSWORD “The Siege” which is one of my favorite bands in the doom genre. Their songs aren’t typical sludgy doom, they are more crunchy, riff heavy and epic with a strong emphasis on viking themes and mythology. The vocalist is perfect at creating the tension of impending doom with his voice. Lastly, ANACHRONAEON is one of my favorite melodic death metal bands and they are gearing up to release their next album in November which could very well be their best work to date. Show closed with MANOWAR, “Swords in the Wind” … epic.

Hollywood Metal Episode 72 (Aug-7-2009)

Hollywood Metal Episode 72 (audio)

Friday Aug 7th 2009:  Lane is now an official co-host of the show I think. Well, at least until PHLEGETHON moves to Seattle in September. We drank some good beer this week and played some incredibly awesome and epic tunes from some of my favorite bands. ANACHRONAEON was first with the title track from their soon to be released album called (2009) The Futile Quest For Immortality. Patrik, guitars and vocals for the band, gave me permission to play the song. This is one of my favorite bands because I think Patrik’s writes some of the best guitar melodies in metal. He is also a great storyteller through his lyrics and album themes. If this song is any indication, the new album should positively rule! IMMORTAL was to be played next. Lane picked the song “Tragedies Blow At Horizon” off (1999) At the Heart of Winter. In all Honesty, this may be IMMORTAL’s best album so any track could have been picked but this song hits on every great element about one of the greatest metal bands in history. POWERWORLD was a discovery this week. I was initially attracted to the album art for (2008) Powerworld. It is reminiscent of KING DIAMOND (top hat), and the works of Necrolord. “Creatures” showcases the great vocals and catchy rhythms of this solid power meta band from Germany. ALESTORM rocks. I don’t think anyone would deny that. These Scottish pirates will probably become one of the most popular bands in metaldom very soon. Their latest album (2009) Black Sails at Midnight is an improvement. (As hard as that may seem) The main melodic riff in “Black Sails at Midnight” just pwns! I need to see them live again. (www.youtube.com/hollywoodmetalradio) SHADE EMPIRE from Finland is a black metal band with heavy industrial influences. I head the latest album from these guys and it is not as industrial as previous releases but further research showed this to be true. While not my usual preference, it’s good nonetheless and I decided to play “Designed for Blood” off their (2006) Sinthetic album to display some range on Hollywood Metal. SEAWOLVES is a Swiss viking metal band. “To The Ancient Gods” is the song I picked from this band. The production quality will probably improve but I think these guys are onto something, Wouldn’t mind seeing these guys earn a spot on Paganfest USA one day. I decided to check out EX DEO because I learned they are going to be supporting ENSIFERUM later this year on a US Tour. What I found was an awesome death metal band with an under-appreciated lyrical theme… ROME!!! Now obviously, as a pagan and heathen metal enthusiast, Rome most often represents the bane of paganism as they were largely responsible for the early spread of christianity. bah! However, it is important to remember, that for hundreds of years, particularly 100BC – 200AD Rome was incredibly epic and powerful. Their armies were unparalleled and conquests, range and spirit was unmatched. The song I picked was about the 13th Legion of Rome which was one of the most historic legions of the Roman army. They were the legion that Caesar picked to cross the Rubicon and wage civil war on Rome and they saw action in nearly every major conflict of Rome for the next 300 years. Rome is truly awesome. Enjoy “Legio XIII” From Spain comes RISE TO FALL, a melodic death metal band. I could have picked a number of tracks from their latest album but I went with “Unknown Presence” to showcase the melodic guitars, pounding drums and strangely pleasant vocals.

Hollywood Metal Episode 65 (May-9-2010)

Hollywood Metal Episode 65 (audio)

Saturday May 9th 2009: Today was Hail to Sweden day because my Swedish friend Magnus Lervik joined us in the studio for episode 65 and I did a pre-recorded interview with Markus Kinnell of MINDFUEL, also from Sweden. Magnus is a great guitar player and is in a band called BLIND TENSION which is sort of a progressive / hard rock / prog / alternative / grunge / you get the point. I played 3 tracks from their forthcoming debut release that is yet untitled. “See Clear”, “Florescent Skies” and “Above Me” were the 3 I picked for the show. Enjoy these and check out the video of Magnus shredding on the homepage. DISSECTION has been a major influence on my life. (The reaper from “Where Dead Angels Lie” is tattooed to my side) Sadly, I feel like the new melodic direction the band was going towards at the end was some of their best work and the metal world will forever miss Jon. “God of Forbidden Light” is one of the amazing melodic black metal songs from the 2006 Reinkaos album. This album rules… period. I particularly like the lead guitar which is often buried in black metal. In this it rings out clean and crisp into the night sky… It’s well known that I worship at the alter of BATHORY so I don’t feel the need to explain how amazing his songs are, just listen to “Father to Son” because like it rules just like all of his others. The song that stole the show today was from another one of my favorite bands ANACHRONAEON. This particular song “Anachronaeon (Where People Live in Dream) has the most amazing melody throughout. (I’m going to learn it this week because its stuck in my head). The melody morphs as the song goes one but the main theme is still there always. Patrik is one of my favorite guitarists because his solos are absolutely mesmerizing. They are long and very different from most heavy metal solos. Lastly, the drumming in this song is perfect as well. Look out for the blazingly fast bass hits near the end of the song.. friggin amazing! MINDFUEL are also good friends of mine from Sweden. I had been wanting to do an interview with Markus about their new album because I have been watching them progress as a band now for about a year. Their debut was released on April 4th and it’s a good mix of heavy metal / power and thrash. We’ve played many of the songs from the album on the show already but there was still room for “Damage”, “Mindfuel” and “Dead Comes Alive” on episode 65. Battle on brothers!

Hollywood Metal Episode 11 (Mar-8-2008)

Hollywood Metal Episode 11 (audio)

Saturday March 8th 2008: Episode 11 opened with a band from Sweden called TME (“The Worlds Collide”). TME features some members from various Swedish metal bands like Vintersorg, Otyg and Fission. Finnish rockers AMORAL (“Mute”) were next up with a melodic death metal song that sounds completely different from most Scandinavian MDM bands. The guitars have an upbeat quality to them that totally makes me want to party and rock out! “Buffalo’s metal saviors” were next, a band called DRAGONWIND, hailing from my hometown of Buffalo, NY. The song was (“Above the Storm”) and it’s just a quality piece of melodic death metal that features some excellent guitar work throughout the song. Sweden’s ANACHRONAEON were next with (“The English Wizard”) This is a truly great piece because it combines a number of different song elements similar to a multi-movement symphony. A smooth melody pierced with groovy almost bluesy interludes lead up to one of the best solo’s I’ve heard in a long time. Let it be known that any song that features a 2 minute solo is automatically awesome! Right now this is a studio only project by the two guys in the band but they should definitely get a full band together at some point and tour because they rock!
