Hollywood Metal Episode 84 (Nov-21-2009)

Hollywood Metal Episode 84 (audio)

Saturday Nov 21st 2009: After a few weeks of schedule and time zone conflicts I was finally able to record a conversation with one of my favorite metalhead friends, Tero Tolkki. Hailing from Finland, Tero is the creator of Finnish news and band database MetalFromFinland.com. The timing of our conversation actually worked out quite well because I was right in the middle of a heavy concert week that featured two Finnish bands. KIVIMETSAN DRUIDI (Heathenfest, in support of ELUVEITIE, BELPHEGOR, ALESTORM, VREID and local support from STATIUS) as well as mighty ENSIFERUM on the North American leg of their From Afar Tour (Support from BLACKGUARD, LAZARUS AD and local support from EINVERA). In between those two concerts I also saw DETHKLOK!!! Needless to say, I didn’t get much sleep this week but it didn’t matter because I was totally prepared for this conversation having had a few weeks to think about what I wanted to ask the dude who created my most trusted source of brilliant metal. In spirit of the conversation I kept the playlist strictly Finnish leading off with STAM1NA an excellent power/thrash band that utilizes and interesting vocal cadence in their songs. They truly have a unique sound and that is extremely hard to do these days. Along with STAM1NA, Tero and I share a mutual respect for MORS PRINCIPIUM EST, a fast pace, but extremely melodic band that is long overdue for some world attention. Every album these guys put out is flawless, yet they still seem to fly beneath the radar. Tero tells me that they are working on new material so hopefully it releases to much fanfare. Mighty ENSIFERUM and INSOMNIUM were also necessary for today’s show, both with new releases and both within my top 5 band list. Tero shares my sentiments on these bands including my appreciation for Petri Lindroos as Jari Maenpaa’s successor. Lastly, KIVIMETSAN DRUIDI was the last choice for today because I saw them on this night and I say,  because I am writing this post after the fact, that this band is very good live. I enjoyed the album when I first heard it. I thought that they could use some finishing touches on their sound but I definitely like them more having seen them live. I hope they get the opportunity to come back soon. Big thanks to Tero Tolkki for taking the time to speak with me, Please check out his site for all things Finnish, metal and awesome.

Hollywood Metal Episode 83 (Oct-31-2009)

Hollywood Metal Episode 83 (audio)

Saturday Oct 31st 2009: Dan and Emilio from LA metal band BLOODSTEEL stopped by along with Victoria for my “un-halloween” halloween party. Listen to the first mic segment and you’ll understand. Ok music for the show was heavily influenced by a Finnish metal withdrawal. So WINTERSUN, INSOMNIUM, ENSIFERUM and newcomers BARANDUIN were all featured. The first three you should be very familiar with if you are reading this but hopefully you come away liking BARANDUIN too. They only have an Demo/EP out but it is one of the best I have ever heard in the battle metal genre, you’d think this band has been around for years. STATIUS “Storm Bracing” was played at the request of Emilio and normally I have a policy of not playing the same song more than once on the program but that rule is negated if the band has actually been a guest on the show before. (read: local band) That, and the fact that the song kicks ass. SVARTBY was selected because I wanted to show Dan a great band from his homeland of Russia. If you are into FINNTROLL you will definitely like SVARTBY. They bring that heavy folk, forest party sound. This selection “Vinterkvall” (“Winter Evening’) is slightly more melancholy than the others on the new album, but it’s still a good representation of the quality on display here. I am particularly glad we played LOST HORIZON today because in double checking the set list I realized that I had forgot to record a previous playing of this band. So I went back and listened to old eps and found the mistake. Turns out episode 64 featured “Sworn in the Metal Wind”. Anyway, great band great song.. end of story. BLIND GUARDIAN is a major influence on BLOODSTEEL so it was only fitting that we ended the show with “Born in a Mourning Hall.” As soon as BLOODSTEEL has some decent recordings I will feature them on the show. Dan and Emilio are excellent guitarist so that stuff should be awesome.

Hollywood Metal Episode 80 (Oct-3-2009)

Hollywood Metal Episode 80 (audio)

Saturday Oct 3rd 2009: Grant and Mike from LA metal band EINVERA stopped by today to talk about their music and their upcoming show at the Key Club in Hollyood with ENSIFERUM, HYPOSCRISY, EX-DEO and BLACKGUARD. Their music is wide ranging and difficult to classify but blackened folk metal would be a good place to start. All 3 band band members are high skilled at their main weapons but each also helps contribute of of the abstract instruments you’ll hear on the upcoming album. Woodwinds, Cello and even horns were on display in the three songs played today on the show. If you haven’t heard these guys visit:
“The Gift of a Ghost” “Let In Without a Name” and “A Mausoleum For the Living” were the 3 songs chosen for today’s episode. Four more songs are in the works so as soon as they are ready we will play them here. In the meantime contact the band through their myspace page for tickets to the ENSIFERUM show ($15 as opposed to $30 at the door). In addition to three great songs from those guys I also picked out four exceptional tunes from some old and new favorites. ENSIFERUM of course is on top of my mind lately with the release of 2009 From Afar so it was fitting today that we play “Smoking Ruins.” As I mentioned on the show, I like the new direction of this band which has taken a liking to utilizing chorus’ instead of a lead singer for many of the newer songs. I think it makes the way more epic and probably a lot more engaging live… can’t wait to see them live for the 3rd time. SVARTBY is another of my favorite bands. These guys are from Russia but they sing in Swedish, albeit badly. The music is of the utmost quality and even though the music sounds pretty serious it is actually lighthearted in nature. The songs are mainly about mythical creatures in magical lands so you know this is going to be great stuff. The song I selected was “Groda Ryttare” which means “Frog Riders” ,… and yup that is full of awesome! GARLEBEN is the discovery of the week though and possibly the year. Randomly came across their myspace page and I cannot believe how impressed I am with their demo material. Not only does it sound great production wise but these guys clearly know how melodic black viking metal works. Every song has a memorable melodic core with heavy rhythm crunching and searing guitars. “Die Letzte Fahrt” (The Last Ride) is the first of a few we’ll play on the show in the next few weeks. Damn these guys are good. Lastly, NORTHLAND is a band I played last week which is another melodic viking metal band that I think is going to go far. From Spain, these guys also have a keen sense of core melodic structure and impressive musicianship. “Freezing Sadness” is the title track from their EP from 2007. Their is new footage of STATIUS, EDGUY, EPICUREAN, REIGN OF AVARICE and EPIDEMIA on my youtube channel www.youtube.com/hollywoodmetalradio. Next week I will have more from SATYRICON and STRATOVARIUS.

Hollywood Metal Episode 79 (Sep-27-2009)

Hollywood Metal Episode 79 (audio)

Sunday Sept 27th 2009: My internet buddy METALOVE joined me on the show today to discuss the NYC metal scene. I always enjoy getting perspectives on scenes outside of LA so this was a great opportunity to speak to someone who is thoroughly entrenched in the metal happenings of the greatest city in the world. This month has been a particularly big one for me as many of my favorite bands decided to release top notch albums. Paramount among these bands is ENSIFERUM who I’ve worshipped since the Jari days. Everyone always compares ENSIFERUM releases to those first two albums which featured the great Jari Maenpaa but this is unfair to the band who has decided to go a different direction than the one they were on when Jari was at the helm. The band has become a lot more epic in recent years by incorporating more elements to the songs. Keyboard atmospheric melodies, epic voice-overs and stand-alone chorus parts are way more prominent these days. I love the new album and the direction this band is and has been heading for a few years now. “Twilight Tavern” is the first of the songs we will play from his album leading up to their tour which comes to LA on Nov  18th. INSOMNIUM is my favorite melodic death metal band. Their first album, 2002 In The Halls of Waiting is still my all time favorite release from these guys. However that is not to say that the music is any worse. That album just set the bar extremely high. This years release 2009 Across the Dark is now my second favorite INSOMNIUM album. Interestingly, in the 2002 album their is a three track run of “Dying Chant” “The Elder” and “Black Water” which I personally consider to be the best three songs in a row on any album ever. In the new album there is also a 3 track run that rivals this starting with the song we played today with “Against the Stream” “Lay of The Autumn” and “Into The Woods” (Definitely will be playing those other two soon.) NORTHLAND is my discovery of the week. These Spain based metallers are well on their way to becoming one of the world’s great viking metal bands. What I particularly enjoy with this band is how the melody wants to stick in your head after you’ve heard it. It is often the case that I will hear good metal yet nothing wants to stick in my mind and I recall the songs melodies as I play it. With great bands like NORTHLAND, they create a simple melodic hook that keeps you humming the songs even after they conclude. You’ll hear exactly what I mean with “Ancient Tales” and a couple others that I will play in the next few weeks. THY WICKED has been in the playlist queue for a while but our themed shows kept getting in the way so I was very happy to finally get to play their great folk metal song “Im Wendel Der Zeit” which loosely translates to “The Change in Time” in English according to Google Translate. While I’m at it, the name of the album “Treu dem alten Weg” translates to “True to the Old Path” which immediately signals awesome epic folk metal and the music confirms it. SATARIEL is one of Sweden’s up and coming melodic death metal bands. It’s been 4 years since their last album so I hope that by playing their song “Claw The Clouds” today they may release something soon. Lastly, newly crowned Hollywood Metal Top 10 band, TYR, concluded the show with another beautiful piece in their native Faroese language “Turi Torkilsdottir.” The latest TYR album is their best one so far and everyone I talk to here in the metal circles agrees. HAIL TYR!

Hollywood Metal Episode 77 (Sep-12-2009)

Hollywood Metal Episode 77 (audio)

Saturday Sept 12th 2009: Episode 77 was a sword theme as Meno, bassist, for recently signed Metal Blade Records band LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH joined us on the show. LIGHTNING SWORDS is a super epic black metal band that has worked their way up through the LA metal scene and are now enjoying a taste of success with a new deal with Metal Blade. We featured three of their excellent songs on the show today including “Plunder and Lightning”, “Let This Knife Lead Us to You” and “Ghost of a Thousand Broken Blades.” I haven’t seen these guys live yet but I’m told they put on a ridiculously good show so I’m looking forward to seeing their tour when the new album is out. Listen to the show to hear our lively conversation about all things metal and LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH!! In addition to those songs I also chose to keep within the sword theme so of course ENSIFERUM “Sword Chant” was a must. An interesting Russian band called ANABIOZ “Lay His Sword By His Side” was also featured. These guys are interesting because they combine elements of folk metal with death metal which makes for a less than usual mix. It seems to work well as their debut album (2008) Through Darkness is strong beginning to end. Lastly, you can’t have an epic sword metal show without some BAL-SAGOTH. song song played was… inhale…. “The Dark Liege of Chaos Is Unleashed At The Ensorcelled Shrine of A-Zura-Kai (The Splendor of a Thousand Swords Gleaming Beneath the Blazon of the Hyperborean Empire: Pt II)”….. HAIL!

Hollywood Metal Episode 51 (Jan-18-2009)

Hollywood Metal Episode 51 (audio)

January 18th 2009: HAIL 2009 and HAIL ODIN! Hollywood Metal is back and stronger than ever in a new web based format. Tracey Hays is now co-hosting all the way from Kentucky. Today we played some of our favorite bands to kick off the new year. ENSIFERUM is my favorite band. “Blood is the Price of Glory” off the latest album Victory Songs (2008) is a truly epic battle song about war. I lyrics are unbelievably epic and the guitars blaze along.. much like an army of heathens charging into battle!!! ELVENKING, also my favorite band… as “Pagan Purity” shreds along you can easily see how this is one of the best bands in the world. Damnagoras absolutely rules (I don’t even acknowledge the album they released without him) and the guitars are heavy and sharp… zero imperfections. DRAGONLAND is another great example of why power metal from Sweden is probably the best in the world. “As Madness Took Me” showcases lead axeman Olaf’s ability to shred yet honor melody and tempo.. great band all around. Also hailing from Sweden is the grandiose SABATON celebrating the triumphs and tribulations of WWII with “Attero Dominatus” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNlRqyUV4ss Please freeze frame at :08 seconds for the most epic power stance ever! BATHORY, the alfather, is a pioneer of black metal and viking metal. Many regard “One Rode to Asa Bay” to be his best viking metal song. I think its debatable but one that is not is that this song is ridiculously awesome! The most under rated rock tragedy of all time is the death of Quorthon, the human embodiment of Odin himself! HAIL QUORTHON! Perhaps my favorite melodic death metal band is INSOMNIUM from Finland who should be releasing another album this year hopefully. These guys are my go to band whenever I’m feeling depressed. Their songs totally speak to the dark parts of my soul and soothe the depression in a way I can’t begin to describe. I cannot help but feel amazing good and happy after rocking out to any of their songs, its a sensation of unity, almost like they are singing about the same pain that I am feeling. KALMAH is a close second for favorite melodic death metal bands “Wings of Blackening” is off their latest release and it features some of the best tremolo picking I have ever heard…. black metal be damned! (just kidding my black metal brothers…) anyway.. today’s show ruled, tune in next week and Hollywood Metal Radio BATTLES ON!

Hollywood Metal Episode 39 (Sep-28-2008)

Hollywood Metal Episode 39 (audio)

September 28th 2008: A little bit of a late start today due to me still being hammered from last nights partying… I out rocked earth last night and I’m damn proud of it! AMON AMARTH, ENSIFERUM, BELPHEGOR and THE ABSENCE are coming to town this Thursday so today’s show paid tribute to these bands. This entry will be short because I have made it perfectly clear that ENSIFERUM is often my favorite band (ELVENKING being the alternate) and AMON AMARTH rules with the might of ODIN himself. I have always intended to play BELPHEGOR and this is the perfect opportunity to insert their evil brand of black metal with “Chronicles of Crime.” I was unfamiliar with THE ABSENCE before this week but I did my research for the show and discovered an amazing melodic death metal band. The song I played by them was “Echos” and it opens with an insanely good melodic solo which makes the song automatically awesome. I’ll see you heathens at the show Thursday!

Hollywood Metal Episode 19 (May-2-2008)

Hollywood Metal Episode 19 (audio)

Friday May 2nd 2008: Hollywood traffic was insane today. It took me an hour to go about 15 blocks down Sunset Blvd. My car was so far past the empty line that I didn’t think we’d start the show on time… Fortunately, I made it on time and Hollywood Metal could be broadcast to the masses. TYR – “Lord of Lies”
ELUVEITIE – “The Song of Life”
ENSIFERUM – “Deathbringer From The Sky”

Hollywood Metal Episode 17 (Apr-20-2008)

Hollywood Metal Episode 17 (audio)

Sunday April 20th 2008: Pagan Fest Special part 2…. with 3 weeks to go until PAGAN FEST HOLLYWOOD we continued on our 4 part series featuring only the bands playing at Pagan Fest Hollywood on May 8th at the House of Blues. ELUVEITIE was up first with (“Tarvos”). There was a few background people in the studio with Damon and I today and as soon as this song played they immediately began asking questions about the artist and the music. They found the flutes and woodwinds incredibly intriguing, the soft melodies floating over the top of heavy guitars always catches people off guard. It’s great to see non metallers take an interest in music they don’t necessarily understand. (“Ahti”) by ENSIFERUM was next. As I mentioned on the show I come from a 80’s thrash metal background, I grew up on bands like METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER.. etc.. for years I thought that only guitars, bass and drums had a place in metal. Towards the late 90’s when I discovered extreme I have come to crave the added dimensions that come with the inclusion of keyboards and folk instruments in epic metal. This has evolved to the point where, in the case of “Ahti”, my favorite part about the song is the keyboard contribution to the song. Meiju Enho was the keyboardist when the tracks were laid and it’s masterful work. Unfortunately, Meiju has since parted ways with ENSIFERUM which sucks because it would have been awesome to see her rock at Pagan Fest. The 3rd song of the show was SUIDAKRA (“The IXth Legion”) and it was the subject of a segment we call “History Connection.” In this segment we like to feature a song and explain how the lyrics relate to a particular event or time in history. I sent a letter to Arkadius of SUIDAKRA and asked him to assist us with this because many of SUIDAKRA’s songs are written about historical events. He got back to me write away with a perfect bit of information about “The IXth Legion.” he writes:

Hey Brendan,

so here is the story behind the IXth Legion:

At the beginning of time, there was a Pict king named Cruithne, son of Cing, and Cruithne reigned for 100 years. He had seven sons called Fib, Fidach, Foclaid, Fortrenn, Caitt, Ce and Circenn. These names of Cruithne’s seven sons were also given to the seven provinces of Pictland. The origins of the Picts are clouded with many fables, legends and fabrications, and there are as many theories as to who the Picts were. The Romans called the pre-Celtic people of Scotland Pictii (Painted) or Caledonii, because Claudius’ words prove that (as described by many historians) the ancient Picts actually tattooed their bodies with designs. To the non-Roman Celtic world they were known as “Cruithni” and for many centuries they represented the unbridled fury of a people who refused to be brought under the rule of Rome, or any foreign invader.

Julius Caesar invaded England in BC 55, but it took about one hundred and thirty-five years before the Romans were ready to assault Scotland in 80 AD – the same summer that the Coliseum was opened and one year after the disaster at Pompeii. The Romans called Scotland ‘Caledonia’ because the dominant tribe of Picts they encountered was the Caledonii. The name is a Romanisation of the actual tribal name and it is difficult to know its meaning to the Romans.

Roman accounts of the Pictish Wars as well as later accounts tell us that the Pictish lands were mainly north of the Forth-Clyde line, to the north of the Antonine Wall.

When the battle started, Caledonians were initially very successful, but because of an outflanking manoeuvre by Roman cavalry, the Caledonians were eventually defeated. Historians believe that the

Caledonian leader Calgacus survived this battle. They realised that the Roman army had a great advantage in a pitched battle in open country and the only way the tribes had any hope of beating the Romans was to conduct a united prolonged war. The Caledonians changed their tactics and conducted a guerrilla war and decided to remain as mobile as possible. They attacked their fortresses, military camps, and their Walls. It was a bold strategy: confront the lion in his lair!

Within thirty years of their establishment, the Picts had destroyed and burned the Roman forts, and according to Victorian legend, Rome’s most famous legion, the Ninth, was sent north from Inchtuthil to relieve Pictish pressure. Legend has it that legion was massacred and forever lost in an unknown battle against the painted men of the north…

Arkadius

Horns up to Arkadius for providing this gem of information about this great song and epic story. We closed the show with TURISAS (“Fields of Gold”). Some of my non-metalhead friends have been tuning into the show lately and they’ve been telling me how much they love TURISAS and TYR. Hearing things like this is awesome because a main reason I wanted to start Hollywood Metal is to educate people about the music and why it deserves praise even if you’re not into the music. Horns up to my good friend  John Davidson in Charlotte N.C. for the kind words this week about TURISAS and TYR.
