Episode 88 – ANACHRONAEON interview

Hollywood Metal Episode 88 (audio)

Today on the show I interviewed a good friend of mine, Patrik Carlsson, from Västerås, Sweden.  Patrik is the guitarist for two excellent bands, ANACHRONAEON (melodic dark metal) and EYECULT (melodic black metal) while Andreas Åkerlind is the great drummer for both. Our history goes back about 3 years now as listeners know that I am a big fan of Patrik’s work, particularly the song “The English Wizard” off ANACHRONAEON’s 2007 album As The Last Human Spot In Me Dies. Over the course of the interview we talked about the motivations behind the two bands as well as the thematic content and song construction. He detailed the history the two projects and explained what is in the immediate future for both. If you’re into melodic death and black metal, I think you will agree that both of these bands deserve to be counted amongst the upper-crust of the dark metal world. Four ANACHRONAEON songs from the new album 2010 The Futile Quest for Immortality were featured on today’s episode. They include: “Ages Ago”, “The Darkness In The Corner Of My Eye”, “The Message” and “The Beast Called Man.” Two EYECULT songs were also featured. These songs are from a December 2009 release called Morituri Te Salutamus, they are “Aeternum” and “Oblivaeon.”

As I alluded to on the show, back in the summer of 2008 the company I work for, SaysMe.tv, was shooting a series of television commercials to promote the company services which is mainly to make it easy for anyone to run their own commercials on TV. The idea was to put someone one TV who clearly looked like they hijacked a commercial spot. I was selected to be that guy so we shot the commercials one night with some camera equipment and copious amounts of Jack Daniels. During the weeks leading up to the shoot I was rocking out hard to ANACHRONAEON’s “The English Wizard” and the director thought it would be great to use that as the soundtrack for the spots. The result was these nine gems:

Hollywood Metal Episode 75 (Aug-29-2009)

Hollywood Metal Episode 75 (audio)

Friday Aug 29th 2009:  My friend from New York City was supposed to join us via Skype on today’s show but the connection never happened so we continued along with our pre-planned agenda of a black metal show. TARABAS is a band we played early on in the Hollywood Metal lifespan and Kutte, the guitarist and vocalist was very gracious towards the show so I felt it was once again time to play a song from those guys. “Warlord” was the name of the track and I thought it was interesting because the style of epic black metal wasn’t to distant from PHLEGETHON in which Lane is the bassist and Tyler is the guitarist. TARABAS has one of the best band logo’s in the world which was also done by Kutte. My friends in ANACHRONAEON have a side project band called EYECULT which we played once before on the show. EYECULT was a melodic death metal band as well, that is, until this upcoming release which places the band firmly in the melodic black metal camp. I think this is an awesome move by Patrik and Andreas as now they have two unique bands establishing a fanbase in two genres. Plus they are doing it with a quality of music that is way better than most. I will keep you posted on the upcoming release, in the meantime enjoy “Skuld.” CEREMONIAL CASTINGS is probably the best American black metal band. No one refutes that when I throw it out there. “Obsidian Spells of Hysteria” was the track we played. Their music is very symphonic and for lack of a better adjective, thick. They have a distinct guitar sound and even though the subject matter is dark and brutal, the songs have a warm, comfortable feeling to them. Salem 1692 is my favorite album from them, I hope they get to LA soon. A band from Brazil called HUGIN MUNIN sent me a track from their upcoming debut release called “God of War.” If you couldn’t figure out by their viking name reference these guys are a viking metal band in the melodic death genre. I’ll keep you posted on the status of their upcoming release. NAGLFAR is one of the best Swedish black metal bands operating today and another band that we played early on in this shows history. This one is called “12th Rising” from their 1998 release Diabolical. BURZUM is the most played band on Hollywood Metal Radio. Perhaps you’ve noticed that the background music is always the songs off 1997 Daudi Baldrs album. Today I felt like playing a song off one of an actual black metal album instead of the ambient usual tracks. 1996 Filosofem is my favorite BURZUM album and even though the tracks are highly distorted, there is something warm and fuzzy about the songs. “Jesu Dod” is a particularly upbeat song with a rhythm that is easy to lock onto. ABYSSOS was a short lived Swedish melodic black metal band from the late 90’s that released a couple of stellar albums before parting ways. “Queen Covered in Black” is an epic song that provides a fantastic definition of the genre. NIFELHEIM is a more straightforward black metal band. Tyler said he saw these guys once and never saw so many metal spikes in his life. The visual appearance of this band is worth the price of admission, not to mention the music is pretty kick ass too.

Hollywood Metal Episode 33 (Aug-8-2009)

Hollywood Metal Episode 33 (audio)

Aug 8th 2008: Hollywood Metal Radio was really interesting today because I was still ultra hungover from Wednesdays debauchery involving booze and bowling. The show must go on…. I opened with a friend of mine’s band called INFERNAL SCOURGE “The Heretic Queen of Autumn’s Fall from Grace”. I played this band in a previous episode and it’s quality epic black metal with many different featured components throughout the song. Guitars, keyboards and vocals are all prominently displayed at one point or another. The next band featured was TEUFEL and I was especially keen on playing this band because they are from Cuba, a place I definitely don’t associate with metal. Proving that great metal comes from all over the world, this gothic metal band kicks ass. The main melodic riff in “The Beauty” is only a handful of notes and some hammer-ons yet it manages to stick in your head long after the song is over. DAYS OF LAMENT is a band that caught my attention because of the story of their band. Two metalhead friend who had gone their separate ways got back together to form a band nearly 20 years after going to metal shows as teenagers. “Destruction Demise” is an excellent progressive death metal song featuring clean and harsh vocals, sharp shredding guitars, and a great solo comprised of pinch harmonics and some awesome guitar effects. (not exactly sure which) UNLEASHED is a death metal band with a prominent viking influence. “Midvinterblot” is a brutal hail to Odin as only this Swedish metal juggernaut can produce. EYECULT, also from the hallowed lands of metaldom that is Sweden, is a band comprised of Patrik and Andreas, who also form the band ANACHRONAEON. This is a side project they started in 2004 and the song I played, “An Inner Landscape,” and an excellent melodic death metal piece from their demo release that year. The project is still ongoing and Patrik tells me they have recorded tracks for a future full length release that they will probable resume working on after the new ANACHRONAEON album comes out. Check back here for updates. ENSLAVED, a metal band that’s been in the epicenter of the Norwegian black metal scene since the early 90s so it was about time I played them on Hollywood Metal. These guys consistently put out excellent albums and songs so the choice was especially hard here. Enjoy “Ormgard!” courtesy of my indecision, and love of a thundering double bass. Hang in there for the first minute as it opens with a filtered guitar effect. One of my favorite bands is DOOMSWORD from Italy, an epic viking/doom metal band. GJALLERHORN, also from Italy, has similar aspects in their epic viking songs about the coming events of Ragnarok. They are able to achieve that epic feeling of battle desperation or impending doom not dissimilar from DOOMSWORD. I played “Ragnarok I: Blood Over Asgard” the first in a 3 part epic series of songs from their 2005 release. TRACEDAWN is the band I think everyone needs to appreciate from this weeks show. These young guys incorporate every great element that I have come to admire from this genre and especially the bands of this genre of Finland who, like this one, seems to know best.
