DUNGEON SYNTH DIGEST XXII

Into Darkness I have been changing the structure of this digest through its 22 iterations. At first I wouldn’t review any artist I already discussed and then I tried my Castle / Cottage / Crypt divisions. Now it is more of a spectrum from the very well known to the most experimental. I find this structure the most sensible as it allows me to highlight the releases people are discussing as well as showcasing the weird outcroppings of the genre. I would like to thank my editor and owner of…

DS Compilation I: Keepers of the Shadow Realm

For the record, this compilation was conceived as an idea across two communities. The larger Facebook dungeon synth group and its smaller cohort, the dungeon synth forum. On the same day, two separate people had the idea to collect and publish a free compilation based around newer music for either posterity, exposure, or contribution into the vast growing renaissance of newer dungeon synth.

Dark Powers: The Magic and Benevolence of Synth Bard

Thick cold fog swirls around in this darkened courtyard. Sporadic flashes of lightning lance the angry clouds overhead. Thunder pounds the courtyard. A light drizzle begins to fall. Ahead, torch flames flutter in the wind on each side of the keep’s open main doors. Warm light spills from those open doors into the courtyard. Doors in the gate towers on each side of the tunnel entrance are shut against the rain. A howling wind rushes through the courtyard. The dark towers of the keep loom above in the mists. Flickering…

DUNGEON SYNTH DIGEST XXI

I can remember a time when I reviewed 5 or 6 new dungeon synth releases. We are now up to 18. This is because of many things. One is I legitimately want to listen to everything that comes out each month and that will yield a larger crop of releases I want to discuss. Add to this my desire to explore the furthermost reaches of the style with more experimental works and one has a big bushel of dungeon synth. Lastly, I feel the market and releases are growing. Included…

Lonely Lands Forgotten: The Ancient Realm of Oldenhelm

“Oldenhelm is from California and before the release of the Relics and Reverence EP due out sometime, the artist known as Shadowcloak has released a three song demo which is really centered around the longest song “Spells of Aeonian Starlight” which the other two sort of being a beginning and end to this haze crawling masterpiece. Oldenhelm knows where to sit at the big dungeon synth tqable. With a sound that is classic and a Bandcamp background which is from the 3.5 edition of D&D, Long Lost Relics Of Power…

This Year in Dungeon Synth (2016)

2016 was not my first year with dungeon synth, although it was my first full year investing the genre. 2015 was really about me coming to terms with this new sound and figuring out why this gag about bedroom fantasy music never ceased to be interesting or engaging. What started perhaps as one of my quirky obsessions fully turned into a full fledged endorsement of one of the greater still obscured microgenres in recent memory. 2016 was perhaps the first year in which I carefully studied most everything which came…

DUNGEON SYNTH DIGEST XIX

December Round Up It is true. I already did a December Dungeon Synth Digest. This is another one. As the year winds down and as people are making lists to show the top X of X, the late releases in December always get cast off or added into next years. This is a moves to make sure this does not happen. With the waining days of December drawing to a close, there are a few more dungeon synth releases that need to be picked before closing the door on the…

DUNGEON SYNTH DIGEST XVIII

This Year in Dungeon Synth As the end of the year approaches, Dungeon Synth is perhaps one of the styles which will not care when its albums are released. I believe that myself and a new acquaintance Boss the Ross from Toilet OV Hell are the only ones doing any sort of end of the year list. I feel in a scene this active and this small, one can perhaps travel towards and objective evaluation of this year in dungeon synth. Before that however, we still need to sort through…

DUNGEON SYNTH DIGEST XVII

The New, The Odd, and The Old I have been keeping up with new dungeon synth for about a year and half. By keeping up I mean have gone through pretty much every release that arrives on Bandcamp and pull the ones I enjoy or want to highlight. Recently, I have been separating new artists that I have already highlighted. Dungeon synth has a tendency to have artists releasing multiple works over the course of the year. I actually enjoy this aspect of the genre more than others. So if…

Future Shock: An Interview With Erang

Erang was my first dungeon synth act which lead me into the bigger scene of current musicians. Erang was also the first interview I conducted as a dungeon synth archivist. Because of this I have followed his releases for a little over a year. The release of ANTI FUTURE was enough generate a few questions regarding style and direction. I have always thought of my interviews as my own questions that I wanted answered and am using this site as reason to ask them. Sure there is promotion and exposure…

Dungeon Archives Recently, I was struck with an idea for a dungeon synth mixtape. Part of this idea is rooted in the hilarity of people trading hot dungeon mixes while the other is based in seriousness. In my past, I used to host a music podcast where we would look for new and up and coming bands to feature on a mix. I would contact musicians and artists and talk to them about featuring them on our show. They would supply songs for me to use. This songs would be…

Voices From The Past: Conversations with Grimrik

Grimrik was one, if not the first compatriot I met during my journeys into dungeon synth. After one of my articles on the history of the first “wave” of dungeon synth, here was a guy who was speaking with authority on a topic I believed to be unknown to most. Grimrik is a living artifact. One of the few still surviving titans of the original black metal scene which fostered this weird side genre that would eventually become dungeon synth. Since that time, Grimrik has seen this genre evolve over…

DUNGEON SYNTH DIGEST XV

This is the 15th installment of column series which was originally designed to help me process through all of the new dungeon synth material. Since then it has aided me in cataloging all of the newer material being released and in turn allowed me to cultivate a master list which I have been giving to new people who are interested in the genre. This list was done more as an initial recommendation but it soon has grown into a list of things I find important in this genre. While I…
