Television Review: BLACK SAILS [S1 E6-E8]

BLACK SAILS [S1 E6-E8] Aired: February, 2014 Produced By: Michael Bay Directed By: Neil Marshall Starring: Toby Stephens, Hannah New, Luke Arnold Website: IMDB Score: 5/9 Hammers I have always been under the impression that my lukewarm feelings for the Starz original drama Black Sails would change. In fact, if we to go with a sailing metaphor, the winds could alter direction at a moments notice and favorable currents would send us sailing smoothly along. I am not going to make any conclusions here but, suffice to say, the things…

THIEF

Thief is the story of Garrett, a black clad re-distributor of wealth who must have spent more on form fitting leather clothing than he could conceivably make back with all the silverware in the world (not that he’s afraid of trying. Either you get a lot of ornate silver ink pots in those skintight leather pants or his clothes aren’t actually black, they’re a portal to an external void dimension that converts looted candelabras into small change). The setting is a troubled faux-Victorian world where the industrial revolution is struggling…

VESPERIA – An Olden Tale

I absolutely love the hype surrounding Canadian melodic death metal act Vesperia. This hype, of course, is mostly self generated by band members who do their fair share of self promotion. Vesperia’s website even has a countdown to their first show of 2014. The charm just seethes from this band. If you have never heard of Vesperia before, do not worry as the band is still unsigned. With that said, the amount of reviews and excitement surrounding their second album, An Olden Tale, is palpable. Who would like some thick…

300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE

300 rise of an empire

While 300, originally released in 2006, was not the pinnacle of contemporary film-making, it was pretty damn entertaining. The film came at a time when interest in comic book movies was rising and the potential to succeed in a market of young adults with a specific interest was very real. 300, while not a critical success, was a cult hit that rode on the popularity of writer Frank Miller’s graphic novel turned movies. Particularly Sin City, which received similar treatment a year before. 300 followed the exploits of Leonidas and…

FREEDOM CALL – BEYOND

Freedom Call has a strange history. The power metal band seems almost overshadowed by their involvement with Dan Zimmermen, drummer for Gamma Ray. Though 2010 was the last time the band played with Zimmerman, Freedom Call seems haunted by the memory of a member from a well known group. This is sad as the band’s 8th album is just as crisp, clear, and competent as their material with Zimmerman. Does Beyond have a goofy yet charming album cover? Yes. Alright, then all is normal. For anyone familiar with the work…

BROKEN AGE

Broken Age (2014)

What do Jack Black and Frodo Baggins have in common? Well, aside with a fascination with peoples’ precious rings, anyway? They’re both now Double Fine protagonists. Jack got the entirely awesome Brutal Legend, and now Elijah Wood has been honoured by Broken Age, a brand new point and click adventure game. Jack’s in there too, of course, but as a permanently high novelty character. And yes, nothing is as it seems. As always. There’s another protagonist too. Without a split this’d just be “Age” and while I don’t think I’m…

Television Review: BLACK SAILS [S1 E2-E5]

BLACK SAILS [S1 E2-E5] Aired: February, 2014 Produced By: Michael Bay Directed By: Neil Marshall Starring: Toby Stephens, Hannah New, Luke Arnold Website: IMDB Score: 6/9 Hammers I feel I was a little harsh on the first episode of Starz new original series Black Sails. Most of my judgement was hinged on the difference of pulp versus reality and that Black Sails couldn’t decide on which shore to land. The rest of the series, however, may change as 55 minutes of television series is vastly different than 55 minutes of…
